Livin' it Up on The Southside

If you were to walk by our home, you would see Eric in the garage working on the "Hot Rod." Chase riding his bike up and down the sidewalk like a madman, and Rachel (myself) chasing (we named him well!) after him, telling him to slow down, and Anthony trying to be just like his big brother.

Weekend Fun

Our friends Tricia and Gerald from Colorado stopped off in Iowa on their way to St. Paul, MN. They camped at White breast outside of Knoxville. Tricia grew up in Knoxville. Eric hired her, when he was manager at McDonald’s. So she wanted to catch up with some high school friends as well.

Eric was on call this weekend, so he couldn’t camp, but I really wanted the kids to spend time with her kids. So I decided to tent camp one night on their site. I got the car loaded up on my lunch hour. Then we were able to take off right after picking up the kids. Eric left two hours later to join us. It was super humid Friday night.

Tricia helped me put up the tent. It took a lot to get the air mattress blew up. Our pump for the mattress had dead batteries. I hadn’t used it in at least 2 years; I should have thought to check it. Tricia offered her hair dryer. It worked great to a certain point, but then I couldn’t get it any harder. So when I went to lay on it, my butt was on the ground. Needless to say, around 4am I let all the air out of it. The ground was more appealing, than all the aches and pains I had in my back from the soft mattress.

We enjoyed our evening together. Chase played with Logan who will be 5 in October. Avery is 19 months. Anthony seemed to enjoy picking on her. He hit her several times as well. But she held her own pretty well. We continued to sweat perfusely until midnight. Then it finally started to cool down. Eric only stayed 2 hours. He said he couldn’t handle the heat, and he needed to be home in case any calls came in. What do you know; the phone started ringing at 7:40am. Of course the last two weekends, no calls have come in. However, it always seems when he is on call they pour in.

We let the kids roast marshmallows and they made smores. Anthony preferred to eat his rare. We finally got them all to sleep around 11pm. We had a visitor in the site. Gerald looks over by my cooler and says, "I think I see a racoon." I grabed my flashlight. The racoon was close to 15 lbs. When we yelled at him, he didn't even more. They are bold and know they can get at the food. Gerald through a rock and he finally scampered off. We immediately put all the food away and locked our coolers in the car. He came back two more times. He was a persistent bugger. We sat out by the fire until 1am, and then called it a night. I was exhausted after a long week. I was hoping the boys would sleep in. 8am would have been awesome, rather than the crack of dawn. Logan and Avery got up around the same time, so there was no way I could get them to just sit and play for awhile.

Tricia was great and helped me pack up our stuff. After breakfast and playing around we were ready to head to the beach around 10:30am. When we arrived, we were the first ones there. So we got our pick of real estate. There are a lot of stairs to go down to get to the beach. Anthony wanted to attempt it by himself. He held onto the railing and I stood two stairs in front of him, in case he lost his balance. As we are going down he starts counting. I knew he could count to 3. Little did I know he could count to 10! I feel terrible for not knowing my kid knows how to count that high. He then was introduced to 11-15.

I had brought along this two person Buzz Lighter raft I had gotten off a cereal box. Chase and Anthony loved it. I pushed them all around. Later Chase and Logan played with it for several hours. We had packed sandwiches for a picnic lunch. We had a lot of fun. However, we miscalculated our stay at the beach by an hour. The kids were really tired from playing and from getting such short sleep Friday night. Anthony wouldn’t walk. So I had to carry him 100 yards and up the stairs to the showers. I got my work out for the day. Chase sucked it up and walked up. Neither wanted to shower, but they had sand everywhere. So we got through that and said our good-byes. Anthony was asleep within 2 minutes. Chase would not close his eyes.

We headed over to Stephanie’s to pick up Kira. She babysat for us Saturday night. Our friend Justin turned 23, and invited us to go out and celebrate. We went to dinner and then out. We had a good time, until the band started. It was so loud we couldn’t talk. It was shortly after that when I fell asleep. I hadn’t even realized I closed my eyes! Eric hits me and asks if I am going to make it. I told him I didn’t think so. I was so exhausted. The going, going and more going finally caught up. We drove with Angie and Justin, so I just couldn’t leave. I told him I would take a cab home, but said that was stupid. We finally left around 11:30, after I had fallen asleep two more times. I should have gone to bed at 7pm! I felt terrible for being such a party pooper. I had taken 5 hour energy, but it wasn’t enough to keep me going this time.

Sunday morning I finally got my turn to sleep in. When I heard the boys, I put the monitor by Eric’s ear. I was tired of him saying, “I would have gotten up with them, but I didn’t hear them.” I made sure he did this time. It was so nice to almost get 9 hours of sleep. What a difference it makes to get just 2 extra hours. I would have slept longer, but I needed to go to church.

Sunday afternoon he had our semi-annual business meeting at church. I gave my presentation, voted on the new constitution and voted on the new leaders. This part took 2 hours. I didn’t stay for the rest. My girlfriend Marnie was having a birthday party, and rented out the wadding pool for all her friends to bring their kids. This way we could all be together and visit. The wadding pool is newer. So it has these water fountains the kids could run through and there were lots of beach balls to throw around.

We had the best time. The boys had other kids to play with, and Marnie had sandwiches, fruit, chips and cake. A playground was near by for them to play on, and after we dried off, Chase went on the carousel. They only charge 50 cents a ride. So I let him go twice. Anthony refused to get on. So we sat on a bench and watched him. He would laugh and wave every time Chase went by. Even though it was a hot weekend, I really enjoyed my time with the boys and friends

The Cake I Made For Anthony's Birthday

Eric's Vacation

Eric spent 10 hours every day last week in Knoxville, working on his motor and car. Not much of a vacation for me, but for him it was exicting to finally see it together and in the car. When you see it up close and in person, it is very impressive. The belts are at least double the size from his old motor. I may be too scared to ride in it, once it is running.

The Motor Is In

Eric is a few hours away from firing up Bruiser. Then the exhaust needs to be put on, and we are off to the track!

Safety Check

Last night Anthony and I went to Wal-Mart. On the way out he was eating a Go-gurt. He made a mess so I cleaned him up while he was in his car seat. Off we went towards home. I was at the stop sign and Anthony says, "No seat belt mom." I said, "Do you mean I forgot to buckle you into your car seat?" He says, "Yup." I pulled into the parking lot and got him buckled in. I was shocked he knew the word, let alone tell me! Good thing I have a 2 year old to keep me in check!

Heading to Merriam, Kansas

We are going to visit Miranda and Rob's new pad. We are going to leave right after I get home tonight. We are planning on taking the kids tomorrow to a petting zoo near them and a fun kiddie pool they found. Miranda and Rob have asked Chase with them next week. Uncle Rob wants some one on one time with his favorite nephew! Chase said that would be fun, but he didn't want to stay all week. So the plan is to meet half way on Wednesday night to pick him up.

I have to write about last weekend's camping trip to Whitebreast. I will see if I can do that tomorrow. I always have more time to do this fun stuff, when I am away from home and away from the cleaning and laundry!

He's Getting So Big

Monday night Anthony used his little potty for the first time. He said he wanted to go. He sat there for a bit, and nothing happened. So then I turned the water on , and that did the trick. He was so proud of himself. I bought him pull ups last night so we can actively begin to potty train!

Wednesday morning Anthony was playing downstairs at Delana's. She has allergies and she sneezed a bunch of times. A few seconds later he turned away from his toy and said, "God Bless you DeDe." She said it brought tears to her eyes and she called me at work to tell me what he said. So far this is the longest sentence he has said. She said she couldn't believe her ears, so she asked him again what he said, and he repeated it right back. I am just amazed.

Happy Birthday to Anthony

My baby is growing up. He turned 2 on the 7th! I just don’t know where the time goes. He is at such a fun age now. He is talking a lot. My mom asked if we were making a list of what he all says now. I told her I can’t. If we ask him to say a word, he can repeat it back. It often sounds a lot cuter coming out of his mouth. He won’t call Chase by his name, rather, “Goo-Goo.” He can say Chase, but won’t use it. Yet, I find it very endearing to hear Anthony call his big brother by a nick name. Anthony is doing really well at remembering his manners. He is all about please and thank you. He is also obsessed with his shoes. He just loves to wear his shoes. We bought him a pair of old school red checkered Vans while in Oregon. He cries when I take them off at night. I am so pleased to have a child with my shoe fetish!

Anthony had a birthday party on Friday at Delana’s. When Chase heard about it, he became very withdrawn and sad. He didn’t want to do anything. So Delana called me and told me she was concerned. I talked to Chase and at first he said nothing was wrong. Then he said the older boys were picking on him. I told him I would come and get him, and we would go out for lunch. That perked him right up. Then Delana got back on and said they were having pizza and cake for lunch. So I get Chase back on the phone and tell him I didn’t know about Anthony’s birthday party, so we would stay for that. This is when he started bawling and said he didn’t want to be there for his party. He wanted to have lunch with me. It all came together then. He didn’t like Anthony getting all the attention for his birthday. Chase and I had a nice lunch at Cici’s and he had a much better afternoon.

Saturday we had Anthony’s family birthday party. Everyone came over around 5pm for dinner. We had spaghetti and meatballs, salad, cucumbers from my neighbor’s garden, corn, strawberries and garlic bread. I made Anthony a Sponge Bob cake. It turned out pretty good. I used frosting with 50% less sugar. It was sweetened with Splenda. It had a strange consistency, but no one said that it tasted different. Eric’s dad and step mom made the trip up from Garden City. Anthony has taken to Grandpa Ron. It started when we saw them at Miranda’s wedding, and then he wanted Grandpa to pick him up as soon as he saw him on Saturday.

We had fun visiting and playing with some of Anthony’s new toys. He received a hand held bubble blower that was a lot of fun, and Chase has taken over his new Batman sleeping bag, that has an inflatable mattress attached. He has slept in every night since Saturday! I will post pictures when I get a free moment.

Happy 4th of July

I am very proud to be an American. I started talking to Chase about why we celebrate the 4th of July. I think he has the basic concepts down. Tuesday night I took the boys to my work to watch the fireworks. We went on one of the parking ramps, so we were higher up. I made popcorn and brought drinks. We waited 45 minutes for 14 minutes of excitement. Then when they started, Anthony got scared from the booming and wouldn't come out of the van.

Yesterday morning Anthony arose at 4:38am. I made him lay in bed with us, but he wouldn't fall back to sleep. So we went in the living room at 5am. I dozed on the couch for 30 minutes and then gave up. He wanted my attention. So he and I went for an early morning walk. The air smelled wonderful and it was still cool out. We got back and Chase was up. He got dressed, and I took them for a bike ride and then to the park to play. When we returned home at 10am it was really hot. So we put up the slip n' slide, and the boys had loads of fun. I then started filling up water balloons and we played with those until 11:30. I made lunch and put Anthony in bed.

I then went to Wal-Mart to grocery shop. I am hosting Anthony's birthday party Saturday night. I am making spaghetti and meatballs, with a tossed salad, strawberries, corn and garlic bread. I decided to save money and make his cake. He is crazy about Sponge Bob, so I am going to make it yellow and use some leftover decorations I have.

I then got things packed up and we hit the road to Knoxville at 3pm. By the time we got there, and Jody and his family got back from the Pella parade, got the boat hooked up and stopped for ice, we finally got on the water at 5pm. Anthony freaked out at first, but as soon as we were on the water, he was fine. We went over to the beach so the kids could play, then we went tubing and swimming in the middle of the lake. Anthony floated with me and Chase went in with Eric. We got off the water around 8:15pm. We were all in bed by 10pm. Just in time to hear the whole neighborhood shooting off fireworks!

I Did It!

Meagan and Eric at the Reception

Chase with Aunt Meagan

The wedding was beautiful. Meagan was a beautiful bride. I started crying when Eric was walking Meagan down the aisle. So it took me a minute to compose myself and stop my voice from crackling. I am happy to say I have my first ceremony under my belt, and it went well. Meagan and Jesse said afterwards, it was just what they wanted. Anthony sat in the front row eating his gummy bears. He wouldn't go down the aisle with Chase. I had envisioned him running up to me, and wanting me to hold him the whole time. That is what happened during the rehearsal. We were trying to get everything figured out, it is hot and Anthony only wants me to hold him. Once we got to the restaurant for dinner he was fine. Imagine that? I will write more about our trip soon.

The Pacific Ocean

Tony enjoyed playing at the beach. He didn't want to take his socks and sandals off to feel the water. It was pretty chilly.
